Integer Wars 2002

Our annual Integer Wars competition was held in the grade 7/8/9 math classroom again this year. Students competed against each other, and against the clock, to achieve the best possible result when doing integer operations mentally. A sample question might look like this:  - 6 -  - 2.   A typical match would pit two students against each other on the computer, with ten questions each, and 100 seconds to answer them. A student's score was the number of seconds left after answering all ten questions, with a mistake costing a 10 second penalty. Typically, the winners' scores were in the 90 percent range, which meant they were answering questions at a rate of at least one per second, with no errors.
The contest was set up as a tournament, with seven rounds; the final round saw just three students remaining out of the 28 in the class. These students played a final round to determine first, second, and third place.

The three finalists:
Nic (Gr. 9) Holly (Gr. 7) and Janine (Gr. 8)
First place went to Holly in Grade 7

This year we also set up an Integer Wars tournament for all the winners from the last few years:

Robin Gr.12 (1999 Winner)   Eyvind Gr.11 (2000 Winner)       Sheena Gr.10 (2001 Winner)
Nic Highest Gr.9 (2002)            Janine Highest Gr.8 (2002)            Holly (2002 Winner)

We weren't sure what would happen, but expected that the senior high students would probably walk away winners.

Here's what really happened ...

After the first round, the three remaining competitors were Janine, Sheena, and Holly. In the final round, Holly, a Grade 7 student, emerged as the Integer Wars Champion for Worsley School for 2002.

By placing first in both competitions as a Grade 7 student, Holly won a total of $45 and 10 Prize Points.
