In The Eye Of A Soldier Of World War 2

In the eye of a soldier of World War 2
I see the reflections
Of indescribable pain. I see death!
I see what would blind the mind of some,
I see nightmares and tears that flow,
I see blood oozing. Hearts stopping,
I see darkness; the light is out.

In the ears of a soldier of World War 2
I hear screams and cries of pain.
I hear bangs, explosions and booms so many,
I hear thuds and cracks, such horrible sounds, even some that
I had never heard before.

In the mouth of a soldier of World War 2
I taste the salt of blood and tears.
I taste the hunger, the dryness, the thirst.
But not all for food.
I taste the hunger for love, for family.
I taste the hunger for victory, for rest.
I taste the hunger for peace.

In the nose of a soldier of World War 2
I smell death.
I smell the stale odour of dried blood, of gunpowder.
I smell the scent of fear, the scent of pain.
I smell hope and I smell tiredness.

In the heart of a soldier of World War 2
I feel love.
I feel a pain so strong; it can't be eased.

There is no medicine for death.
For the sting it leaves to those living.
I feel sadness, yet a glint of happiness.
So little. Almost none.

I feel alone- surrounded by thousands, millions- yet I feel alone!
