Novel Study Activity: Making Butter

On the first day of school in 2005 we had fun making butter, because Ma made butter in the chapter book we're reading: "Little House in the Big Woods", by Laura Ingalls Wilder.

We washed our hands and sat in two groups. Mrs. Gula poured some cream into two jars, one for each group. Next we took turns shaking the cream (Austin figured we shook it about 214 times). After the butter sat in the fridge, we took turns washing it. Layne softened it in the microwave before we added salt.

We ate butter on crackers and most us liked it. We drank buttermilk, but it wasn’t like the buttermilk you buy. There was even some butter left over for us to take home in little cups. We will remember the day we made butter at school!
