![]() Our annual Integer Wars competition was held in the grade7-11 math classrooms again this year. Students competed against each other, and against the clock, to achieve the best possible result when doing integer operations mentally. The contest was set up as a tournament; a sample question might look like this: [ - 6 - - 2 ]. A typical match would pit two students against each other on the computer, with ten questions each, and 100 seconds to answer them. A student's score was the number of seconds left after answering all ten questions, with a mistake costing a 10 second penalty. Typically, the winners' scores were in the 90-100 percent range, which meant they were answering questions at a rate of at least one per second, with no errors.
