The grade 10 math class went across the road to calculate the height of the radio tower.





After making some measurements, they returned to class.

There are several ways to calculate the tower's height.

Method 1, learned in grade 9, involves measuring a distance from the base of the tower using a tape, and then measuring the angle to the top of the tower with a clinometer.
Here is the calculation the students did when they returned to the classroom:




Method 2 is learned in grade 10, and although the calculations are a little more work, the method is more practical. It involves making two angle measurements, and a distance measurement in between.
Because the distance can be measured well away from the tower, it makes everything easier to do ... especially if there is a crocodile-infested river between you and the tower!
