The 3/4/5 class is growing grass to test the effects of root systems on soil erosion.

A simple home-made hydroponic vegetable garden. This can be easily made for about $120.

The 'Tomatosphere' project allows students to investigate how seed growth is impacted by space travel. The seeds we used spent several months in a weightless environment on the International Space Station. Students are determining germination rates of the tomatoes, and will submit their data to the Canadian Space Agency as part of a larger study. For more information, visit www.tomatosphere.org

A small net cup is used to house a germinating lettuce plant. The lettuce seed was germinated in rock wool and covered in expanded clay balls, which help retain moisture for the lettuce roots when they develop.

A simple hydroponic reservoir containing an air stone and nutrient solution allows many lettuce plants to grow without the mess and smell made by soil.

The class celebrated a successful lettuce crop by making tacos.
