Making Rock Candy with the Grade Three and Four Classes

The grades three and four classes learned more about crystal growth by growing their own rock candy!

First some water has to be heated. The water has to be very hot.

Everyone gets to help!

Next, sugar is added. Lots of sugar!

We did say lots of sugar, didn't we? After each batch of sugar is added, the solution has to be stirred until all the sugar dissolves ... then more is added!

After a while, the hot water is so full of sugar that no more will dissolve. That means it's time to pour it into glasses and let it cool.
Strings are hung from pencils into each glass.

As the sugar-water solution cools, it can't hold as much dissolved sugar. (You can dissolve a lot of sugar in hot water, but not as much in cool water). Some of the sugar turns back into a solid as the water cools. But it needs a place to stick to ... so it sticks to the string!

Now it's time to eat the sugar crystals ... which have formed
a gigantic sugar crystal on the string ... rock candy!
