Envirothon '99
On October 27th, 1999, five members of our Biology 20 class went to Grande Prairie to compete in Envirothon '99, a competition that is run all over North America to help increase awareness of environmental issues. This year, the focus was on hoofed animals (ungulates), water quality, soils, and wildfires. Fairly substantial cash prizes are awarded to the winning team.
Attending were Cara K., Amber W., Jody D., Sam C., and Sandy P.

Two weeks before the competition, our students went to Grande Prairie on field trips to obtain the information they would need to complete the project. This involved:
  • a tour of Weyerhaeuser's water treatment process
  • learning how Environment Dept. officials tag and track caribou
  • a soil-testing demonstration by an employee of Agricore
One week before the competition, our students received the information they would be tested on, as well as an outline of the simulation they would have to present. They met regularly during the following week to prepare.
On the day of the competition, held at St. Joseph's H.S. in Grande Prairie, our students demonstrated their knowledge of soil testing, wildlife management, and water quality testing. Then they presented their simulation of the running of a national park.
Following dinner, awards were presented; our team placed second, having gone up against two other teams (both from St. Joe's).

Overall, our students found that the experience was very enlightening, and that they learned a great deal about the issues surrounding our environment, in a fun and interesting way!
