We made simple paper lanterns that we painted, and which light up and look very beautiful!

The supplies you need are inexpensive and can all be found at a Dollar Store. The lanterns themselves come in packages of ten, in three sizes. They stretch open. You'll also need some cheap watercolour sets, an assortment of brushes, water, some tea lights, string and clear tape.

Start by stretching open a lantern and placing the metal frame inside that holds it open. These don't fit very well; don't worry if they bow a little bit. For smaller lanterns, bend the wire at the top end of the lantern out of the way so that a tea light can be dropped in. Then tie some string around the center hook.

Use the watercolours to paint some simple designs all the way around the lantern.

Flowers or butterflies are easy to paint and look great. Don't worry about details; use splashes of colour.

After the paint is dry, turn on a tea light and drop it in. Place some strips of tape across the hole at the bottom of the lantern so the light won't stick out. You should be able to turn the lantern upside down to remove the light.
