Pablo Ruiz Picasso was a Spanish painter, sculptor, printmaker and ceramicist who lived in France. He was one of the most influential artists of the 20th century. He was known for co-founding the Cubist movement, among many other styles. Cubism was about a reduction of forms to a few geometric shapes, showing multiple perspectives. Its flatness means neither the foreground or background are given greater importance. The idea of multiple perspectives based on flat, geometric shapes was a new idea. His painting Les Demoiselles d'Avignon from 1907, depicting a group of variously dressed women, is considered the first Cubist painting.

Below are some samples of his most well-known works. Click on each to enlarge it; click again to shrink it.

This is your chance to make a Cubist painting in the style of Picasso. You'll need some art paper, a pencil and eraser, a set of acrylic paints and various brushes, and a bowl of water and cloth to clean your brushes between colours.

Examine the paintings again. What makes them 'Cubist'? Pick out some key features; your instructor will help you to identify them.

Draw a face, incorporating these features. Then paint the various segments in colours of your choice. These are surrealistic paintings, so the colours don't have to be realistic. Paint the bckground too; make it solid colour(s) if you want.

Lastly, name your painting and sign it!
