Pop art began in the late 1950s, and has always been about present-day culture or cultural icons. It uses bold colours, and an image that is changed somehow. It could have:
a reduced number of colours (to make a silhouette)
a dramatic change of colours
multiple copies of the image
distortions
any combination of the above.
The only requirement is that the subject is easily recognizable to most people.
Pop art often takes images that are currently in use in comic books, movie posters, iconic figures, or advertising.
Product labels and logos are often chosen by pop artists, as seen in the Campbell's soup can by Andy Warhol.

Andy Warhol's "Marilyn" uses reduced colours, silhouettes, dramatic colour changes, and in other prints, multiple images.
