The first step in making some silhouette art is to use watercolours to paint a roughly rectangular area on your sheet of paper with a mix of colours.

We chose a mixture of blues and greens to suggest sky. You might try bands of orange, red and yellow to suggest sunset.

Allow to colours to run together, but paint on a flat horizontal surface so you don't get dribbles down the page. Let your page dry.

Now you want to find an animal silhouette and cut it out. At the bottom of this page are links to some PDF pages that you can print, with pictures sized to fit your painted background. You can also find your own on the internet.

Cut out the figure you've chosen. Then glue it to your painting, as shown at the right.

You can leave the border white, or use black paint to fill it in. If you do that, be sure to leave the edges of the coloured portion ragged.
