We're painting space pictures. There aren't any rules here, just whatever your imagination can come up with.

You'll need small stretched canvases, various sizes of brushes (small to large), a toothbrush, acrylic paints of all colours, water and some paper towels for spills. Some people might want gloves, although acrylic paint washes off easily. Aprons will help keep the paint off clothing.

We also had a photograph of outer space with nebulas, galaxies and stars showing on the front TV. You could instead pass around full colour prints if no TV is available. This was only for inspiration, not as something meant to be copied.

Our starry-eyed instructor doing her thing.

The first step is to paint the canvas black. Use a big brush to save time. Remember that acrylic paint dries fast, so if you make mistakes later you'll have to paint over them. Black works great for this.

If you also paint the sides of the canvas, it will look nicer hanging on a wall without a frame.

Give this a few minutes to dry so you won't get balck paint on your hands.

Remember, there is no correct way to do this ... anything goes. You can add galaxies, nebulae, planets, comets, shooting stars, the moon, spaceships, and of course stars.

We used white paint and tapped the end of a paintbrush to get white spots of paint for stars. You might try flicking paint off a toothbrush with your fingernail for smaller stars.

Press down on a wider paintbrush loaded with several colours and spin it to make convincing circular planets. Add details with a small brush.
