My Photos
Some Examples

During the 40 years I spent as school photographer and website manager, I took over 200,000 photos using various digital cameras. I also of course took many personal photos. Unfortunately, a few years ago I lost a great many of them to a hard drive crash. Looking over the photos in my files, I picked out a few that illustrate some of the concepts I've been describing.

Many good photos happen by accident. Mabel the dog hardly ever jumps like this! I just happened to be there taking pictures. I cropped this part out.

This is my daughter Jesse. It was taken from a distance using a film camera, and later digitized. This one I was ready for; she wasn't too impressed with having to hold a dead fish!

Basketball photos in a poorly lit gym, where you can't get close to the action, require a telephoto lens, an attached flash, and tight cropping. I also frequently used prefocussing on a spot and waiting for something to happen there.

I took pictures for the 4H club, and often found myself up close and personal with various bovines. They drool a lot!

This photo uses the technique of 'triangles', here formed by the ball, head and feet. You don't try to set this up when shooting, but select images that can be cropped to emphasize this.

This is a fairly common setup for Grad photos. This one of my daughter Emily and friends turned out amazingly well, based on the vivid colours and the fact that their feet disappeared!
