Here you can see the individual pictures that make up the photo, held in place by a table. The tiny piece that contains the eyes was used to make several more pictures with the eyes closing in stages; these pictures were strung together to make a single animated gif file of the eyes closing. Some skill with HTML and a graphics program, and perhaps a little art talent, are necessary to make the changed eye pictures look realistic. The larger the section to be animated, the more difficult it is.
This method doesn't always work. Photos look best in JPG format (which allows a full range of colours), while animations must be in GIF format (only 256 colours allowed). Fewer colours in the GIF image may look strange next to all the colours of the JPG portions of the photo. We were lucky here ... the difference is unnoticeable.
