Argon is a chemical element with symbol Ar and atomic number 18. Argon is a colourless, odourless, non-reactive inert gas, which makes about 1% of the air we breathe. Argon is classified as a noble gas.

Argon is often used when an inert atmosphere is needed. It is used to fill incandescent and fluorescent light bulbs to prevent oxygen from corroding the hot filaments.

Argon is also used to form inert atmospheres for arc welding, growing semiconductor crystals and processes that require shielding from other atmospheric gases. As an insulation gas, argon is a popular way of improving thermal insulation in multi-pane windows.
