Treehoppers

The Treehopper has sucking mouthparts that can penetrate a tree’s bark to eat its sap. Its saliva prevents a tree from closing up the bite area, spreading diseases that are often deadly to their hosts. They are easily recognized by their vertical face and enlarged thorax resembling a leaf or thorn. Even if they face the wrong direction, birds usually don't spot them. Most of these sap-sucking insects are native to the tropics.
