His job was to sit down near the floor of the plane and use an aiming device that would pinpoint the target. He would guide the pilot directly over the target, where the bombs would be dropped. ![]() ![]() ![]() My uncle was a senior bomb aimer in the 433 Squadron. He had completed 29 successful missions over France, and after his next mission would be entitled to return to Canada on leave. The crew of John Harvie's Halifax was due to leave on another sortie over France, but their bomb aimer became sick. My uncle Donald was assigned to their crew for that mission, which was to be his last before returning to Canada. His last flight was with a crew he had never flown with before. [continued...] |
