Goop is a polymer you can make from white glue and borax. Borax is a natural mineral composed of sodium, boron, oxygen and water, which has been used for thousands of years as a cleaning agent.

To make goop, you'll need a small amount of borax (available at a grocery store), some white glue, water, a few bowls and measuring spoons, and some paper towel. If you want coloured goop, get some food colouring.

White glue and borax are not particularly harmful, but you'll want to avoid getting any in your eyes or mouth.

Start by mixing 1 teaspoon of borax with 6 tablespoons of water. Stir the solution for a while to make sure as much of the borax as possible dissolves. You might try using warm water.
In a second bowl, combine 1 tablespoon of white glue with 1 tablespoon of water. Add a drop or two of food colouring to this mixture if you want to.

We began by using craft glue, but discovered that the goop we made wasn't cohesive enough, so we switched to another type of white glue. You might want to try various brands of white glue (Elmer's glue works well) to find one that makes the best goop.

Now add two teaspoons of the borax/water solution to your glue mixture, and stir thoroughly until it forms a big clump. Take the clump out of the bowl and place it on some paper towel, and pat it dry. Pick up the clump and knead it in your hand until it becomes pliable. You've just made goop!

Your goop is very similar to Silly Putty in its properties. You can squeeze it, pull it, stretch it, and even break it as if it were a solid, and it won't stick to your hands. You can keep it fresh by storing it in a plastic baggie in the refrigerator.
