Belgian

The Belgian is of course originally from Belgium. Belgium is part of that area of western Europe which developed the large black horses known as Flemish horses, which carried armoured knights into battle. But the region has been known for its large horses for thousands of years, and the horses of the region, imported by other countries, have provided the bloodline from which almost all draft breeds have arisen.
The Belgian breed has been carefully protected and nourished by the Belgian government for centuries; the horse is considered a national treasure. It became popular in North America during the 20th century, although its popularity declined, along with that of all draft breeds, after the Second World War. Recent interest in this breed of large horse has made it popular once again.
