Rocky Mountain Horse

The Rocky Mountain Horse breed was developed in the Appalachian Mountains of Kentucky. It is a medium-sized horse with a gentle temperament, and a distinctive gait that made it ideal for farm work in the rugged foothills of the Appalachians. It was used to pull plows and work cattle, but could be ridden bareback by children. It was adapted well to cold, and could survive winters outdoors.
The Rocky Mountain Horse is a small but recognized breed, and its calm nature makes it ideal for working around cattle, and for 4-H projects. The horse is sure-footed on rough ground, and its gait lets horse and rider cover greater distance with less tiring.
Rocky Mountain Horses are medium height, with a wide chest. The horse has an ambling four-beat gait ... when the horse moves, you can count four distinct hoof beats. This is a natural gait present from birth, that does not require teaching. All Rocky Mountain Horses have a solid body color; some have minor markings on the face. The legs can be white, but only below the knee.
