Hyperbole is a form of speech that could be described as 'extravagant exaggeration'. It is not appropriate when writing essays or reports, but a little hyperbole (pronounced 'hi-per-bo-lee') is an effective way to colour the speech of a character in a short story, or to make a point effectively in a humourous piece of writing. Here's another example: "I had so much homework, I needed a pickup truck to carry all my books home!" Hyperbole is supposed to evoke a ridiculous picture in your mind, ... and in the process, make the point effectively. You must have had a lot of homework! We asked our visitors to make up their own examples of hyperbole, and send them to us. We posted the best ones on their own page, and even awarded prizes to the best ones! |
