The World's Largest Trees

What does 'largest' mean? For trees, this can be the height of the tree, or the volume of wood in the tree. In each case, there is a 'biggest' specimen. We'll tell you all about them.

Both record holders are Redwoods, but there is more than one type of Redwood. Botanists recognize three species:

- Coast Redwood (Sequoia sempervirens)
- Giant Sequoia (Sequoiadendron giganteum)
- Dawn Redwood (Metasequoia glyptostrobides)

The first two are found only in California; the third in a remote region of China.
The Coast Redwood is the tallest of the three types, while the Giant Sequoia is heaviest and oldest.
