This pastel portrait, painted by Toulouse-Lautrec when he was 23, shows his 34-year-old friend Vincent van Gogh. The bright green and very potent alcoholic beverage absinthe became the 'creative fuel' for the artists of the day. It became known as "the queen of poisons", favoured by Lautrec, Picasso and van Gogh.
