A liger is a hybrid big cat, the offspring of a male lion and a female tiger. Ligers are the largest cats in the world. They aren't found in the wild; the habitats of lions and tigers don't overlap. They exist only in captivity, where lions and tigers are kept together and allowed to breed. A male liger can weigh up to 1,000 lbs (450 kg), and can be 3.4 metres (11 feet) long. Their appearance is a mix of both parents.
Ligers often enjoy swimming (like tigers) and are social (like lions). Their roar is said to combine features of both a lion's roar and a tiger's chuff. Their growth isn’t checked by the usual growth-limiting factors, which means they can continue to grow throughout their lifetimes. You may wonder what the result would be if a male tiger breeds with a female lion. In that case, the offspring are called tigons, which are usually smaller than either parent. Male ligers are usually sterile, but female ligers can sometimes reproduce with lions or tigers, creating even rarer, although smaller, hybrids. However, the extremely rare litigon, a hybrid of a male lion and a female tigon, is roughly the same size as the liger. White tigers have been crossed with lions to produce "white" (actually pale golden) ligers. The first known white ligers were born in December 2013 in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina to a white male lion and a white female tiger.
