Onomatopoeia is used to describe words that look like the sound they are describing. For example, when you rattle a jar of dry beans ... the word 'rattle' describes the sound, and it makes the sound when you say the word. Similarly, a balloon will pop ... the word 'pop' makes the sound the balloon does.

Here are some more examples of onomatopoeia ...

BUZZ

'Listen to the bee buzz by'.

CLICK

'Click the button and take a picture'.

CRACKLE

'Listen to the fire crackle in the dark' .

FLUSH

'Don't forget to flush the toilet'.

KISS

'A long kiss is something you won't forget'.

RATCHET

'The bar is a ratchet in the machine'.

WHOOSH

'Dave whooshed down the hill'.

O.K., get the idea? A word that is onomatopoeic makes a sound, when you say it, like the thing it is describing. We've received lots of examples from our visitors ... have a look at our entries.
