The Sternum

The sternum, or breastbone, is a flat bone at the front of the rib cage; seven pairs of ribs attach in front to the sternum and together they complately enclose the chest and help protect the heart and lungs.

The xiphoid process is the pointed part of the sternum located at the bottom; it is made from cartilage, but may become bony in old age.
