Solving a Triangle

Example 6: Solve

To 'solve' means to find all the missing sides or angles.

We need to find side x and angles θ and φ
Let's use the Pythagorean Theorem to find x:

x2 + 402 = 502
x2 = 502 - 402
x2 = 900
x = 30

We're going to use this angle to make a trig fraction:
We're finding θ so  o = 40  and  h = 50

                          40/50 = sinθ
                          0.8 = sinθ
                          θ = sin-1(0.8) = 53°

                          This makes φ = 180 - (53 + 90) = 37°
