Making a Gargoyle

I used Play-Doh to make the model here. While it shapes very easily, it is too soft for proper sculpting; handling it causes details to get smushed. You have to be very careful. Also it gets very brittle when it dries. Between sessions you can keep it soft by storing it in a plastic lunch bag. Small sculpting tools are useful, but you can substitute anything.

1. Use four 4-ounce containers, all the same colour
2. Two will be used for the body. Save the rest for appendages

3. Knead it thoroughly

4. Give it a rough shape. The top left will be the snout

5. Use the table to flatten the bottom

6. Use a tool to push out a deep mouth

7. ... so it looks like this

8. Use a tool like a pencil to poke two nostrils

9. Roll out a small cylinder. Use the table

10. Press it around the nostrils.

11. Press it in to the body

12. ... all the way around

How you design your gargoyle is totally up to you; you don't have to do what we do here. Be creative. But be sure to press the add-ons into the body so they'll stick. save any fine details for last, so they don't get smushed later

13/14. Use a scooping tool to excavate two large holes for the eyeballs

15.Roll two eyeballs slightly larger than the holes and insert them

16. ... to look like this

17. Roll out a unibrow ...

18. ... and attach it here

19. Smush it carefully onto the head

20. Cut a deep gap for the mouth

21. ... so it looks like this from the side

22. Use a spoon tool to scoop out the mouth

23. ... so it looks like this

24. Take a small piece and insert it as a tongue. Press it down at the back

25. Make a hole for a wing. Make a small wing. Notice the bulge that will go in the hole

26. Press it firmly in place

27. Attach the other wing the same way

28. Give the wings some curl. Make them look sinister

29. Make two holes for the arms. Roll out two small arms

30. After inserting the arms and pressing them in place, use a sharp tool to cut some talons

31. Remove a piece to make two feet, and cut some toenails

32. Make some more scales

Final masterpiece!
