Gargoyles are sculptures that sit on the corners of old buildings in Europe. They were originally used to direct rainwater away from the building. They later became purely ornamental. An ornamental gargoyle is called a grotesque.
These sometimes were placed on roofs to keep out evil spirits, but usually were carved in place just for fun. A few were modelled after unpopular government officials at the time, as revenge.
