This is a fun activity for any students who are able to spend time on their knees. As this activity is on concrete, some sort of padding for under the knees is definitely recommended.

If the artwork will be designs, or images of flowers, trees or simple outdoor scenes, then large sidewalk chalk will work well.

For participants who'd like more of a challenge, perhaps by recreating a famous work of art as some students shown here did, then you'll need large boxes of coloured chalk, or if your budget can afford it, chalk pastels.

Depending on how much foot traffic the sidewalk gets, the artwork could last for weeks. But if it rains, it will disappear! Here are a few ideas, created by high school students, that you might try:


Copying a famous painting is always fun. Print out a copy to work from.


Picasso makes a good subject for chalk art. You can even improvise your own!
