I was curious about how well artificial intelligence sites are able to create new pieces of original writing. I visited one, and gave it the task of writing a short several paragraph essay on the topic "The Importance of Homework". Here is the result I got after about 30 seconds:
As a teacher and author of thousands of articles in many subject areas, I can confidently say that this artificially produced essay is about as perfect as it gets. The use of current educational jargon is spot-on. The algorithm apparently draws on multiple sources to produce an original piece of writing - it's not just finding and reproducing a previously published article on the topic. And it will create a piece of writing on any topic. Moreover, as an educator, I can see that this capability portends fairly large changes in how teachers will have to assign and grade writing assignments, at least at the high school level. Since there is no way to search for copies of this writing on-line because they don't exist, there is no way for a teacher to prove that a student didn't produce the writing themselves. Written assignments will likely have to be completed entirely within the classroom, without student access to the internet. An alternate work-around might be to insist that students hand in copies of their work at multiple stages of completion, beginning with a rough draft, a first draft, and so on, with changes and improvements made note of. |
