The clay is shaped and reshaped over and over again, being photographed each time. Often the clay characters will have pre-made facial features or appendages to facilitate quick changes in body alignment or position. Visit The Beauty of Animation to learn more about the history of stop-motion animation. In a classroom setting, we often did this type of animation with only minimal props or backgrounds. Modelling clay was usually used to create the characters. Simple digital cameras were used for the photography. We used ambient light, which worked reasonably well, although flickering from frame to frame often occurred when scenes took several days to complete. Once again, Irfanview and Gif Construction Set were used to make the final GIF file. A pair of students came up with the idea of using the small mannequin from our art class, as it was infinitely poseable and could stand on its own.
