MIXED PROBLEMS

Example 8: Find the lateral area

The lateral area is the wrap-around part of the cone,
without the circular base

SA = π·r·s + π·r2

SA = π·8·21

SA = 527.8 cm2   rounded to 1 d.p.

Example 9: The ice cream cone is completely full of strawberry ice cream. Find the total volume of ice cream used.

There are three parts to this problem: finding the volume of the half-sphere, the volume of the cone, and then adding the two results.

Volume of Half-Sphere:

V = (4πr3 ÷ 3) ÷ 2
V = (4π33 ÷ 3) ÷ 2
V = 56.55

Volume of Cone:

V = (π·r2·H) ÷ 3
V = (π·32·10) ÷ 3
V = 94.25                Total Volume = 56.55 + 94.25 = 150.8 cm3
