A unit in the grade 9 science course explores adaptations that plants and animals on Earth have developed in order to survive in a particular environment. For example, moose have large antlers to help them fight for mates. Whales have blubber to protect them from the cold. Angler fish have a little light on a stalk to help them attract prey in the dark ocean depths. Some lizards can change colour to avoid predators.

An assignment I developed for students was to design a creature for an alien environment, one which was completely unlike any on earth. Both planets were described; students had to describe the creature that would be well-adapted to that environment. Then I made a page and created the images and animations according to their specifications.

This project was from my early years at WCS. In later years I also taught HTML web page construction, and animations using a graphics program and amimated gif software. Those students could have easily made their own pages and creatures.
