A very helpful man named Garth replied to my posting. He was very interested in WWII, and had read a lot about the subject. He recognized my uncle's name!

Here's what he told me:

Hello Bill:

   As you know, I have a great interest in this subject (airforce history). I have quite a few books. The one book that might help you I don't have. Going over the list of your uncle’s crew, I thought one name looked familiar. The name Harvie rang a bell. Doing some more research helped. I'm quite sure J.D. Harvie wrote a book on his experiences during W.W. II. I believe he mentions your uncle in the first chapter …

Garth told me that John Harvie had been a navigator on a bomber that was shot down over France. He survived the crash, but was captured and became P.O.W. (Prisoner of War). After the war ended he returned to Canada, and eventually wrote a book about his experiences.

Garth believed that my uncle Donald may have been a crew member of John's, on that plane!


John Harvie was a veteran of WWII, so that meant he would be getting on in years ... probably at least eighty years old. Nevertheless, he had an email address (which Garth found for me), and I sent him a short note asking if he'd known my uncle. Within just a few days I heard from him:      [continued...]
