Chlamydia is really several different infections, all of which are caused by the chlamydia bacterium. Specifically, Chlamydia trachomatis is the one that causes various sexually transmitted diseases. Chlamydia is the most common STD.

A chlamydia infection can have no obvious symptoms in either women or men. If there are symptoms, in men it will cause groin pain and swelling, and burning on urination. In women the cervix may become infected, causing an off-white discharge and odour in the vaginal area, as well as abdominal pain.

In women this infection can become serious, as it may remain hidden and eventually spread to the uterus, Fallopian tubes and ovaries as Pelvic Inflammatory Disease, which can result in chronic pain, infertility, and even death.

Babies can get chlamydia; half of all babies delivered through the birth canal of an infected women will develop chlamydial conjunctivitis (pink eye) a week after birth. A quarter of babies passing down the infected birth canal will get chlamydia pneumonia.

Antibiotics in the erythromycin family will kill and cure chlamydia, if your doctor finds that you have this infection.
