![]() Gonorrhea is a common infection of the genital and urinary tracts caused by the bacteria Nisseria gonorrhoeae. It's also common to have both gonorrhea and chlamydia infections at the same time. Gonorrhea is transmitted through unprotected sexual contact with someone who is already infected. Symptoms in men include a burning sensation when urinating, urinating more often than normal, and a pus discharge from the penis, the tip of which may be red and swollen. Some men experience no symptoms at all. Most infected women do not get symptoms, although there may be a greenish-yellow discharge from the vagina, and occasionally itchiness and a burning sensation when urinating. This infection in women is dangerous because it may lead to gonorrhea of the uterus and fallopian tubes, and Pelvic Inflammatory Disease, which can cause severe pain, fever, infection of the whole body, infertility, and even death! Newborn infants can get gonorrhea eye infection (conjunctivitis) as they pass through an infected mother's birth canal. This can cause pus buildup and potential blindness if not treated. All newborns get an antibiotic ointment put into their eyes immediately after being born, which kills both gonorrhea and chlamydia conjunctivitis. Gonorrhea used to be curable with Penicillin. Unfortunately, because antibiotics have been used so much (often given out for simple colds, where they don't do anything) the gonorrhea bacteria has developed a resistance to Penicillin. More powerful antibiotics are now being used to kill the bacteria and cure gonorrhea (for example, ceftriaxone or azithromycin).
