Trichomonas is caused by a single-cell parasite, Trichomonas vaginalis. There are rarely any symptoms of this disease in infected men; the infection often has no symptoms in women either. If women do have symptoms, they may include a yellowish-green frothy discharge from the vagina with a musty odour. Vaginal itchiness is also common. Other possible symptoms are lower abdominal pain and pain when urinating; these symptoms often worsen around menstruation. The vagina and cervix can also be swollen and irritated.

The disease is spread through unprotected sexual intercourse. Diagnosis of this disease is made by examining the vaginal discharge under a microscope. Even though this infection is not a bacteria, it can usually be cured with an antibiotic. However, since the parasite rarely causes symptoms in men, reinfection of women by their untreated infected partners is common.
